In recent years, there has been a staggering amount of money from foreign sources pouring into the coffers of premiership football clubs. This has generated much controversy because of the level of debt these clubs would incur in the process. In short, some of these foreign owners have used other people's money in the form of loans to buy these clubs. This has raised serious questions over the long term future of these businesses.
Foreign investment in premiership football clubs looks set to continue over the coming years. In many ways, the premiership is a victim of its own success. It is hugely popular within the United Kingdom but also in many countries all over the world. The premier league is considered by many to be the best soccer league in the world. Such popularity means that there is no shortage of investors who are only too eager to share in this success.
In the past, English clubs were owned by UK businessmen. These days, we have owners that originate from the United States, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Plus, there are more from other countries lurking on the horizon just waiting for the opportunity to invest. There was a time when it was the Italian and Spanish leagues that were the envy of world football and the place where all footballers wanted to ply their trade. That is no longer the case and all roads point to England and the premiership.
Many supporters are a little suspicious of foreign ownership and the debt that would come with it. That said, many supporters would welcome the injection of cash for the transfer of new players or stadium redevelopment. Apart from being saddled with huge debts, another concern that many fans have with these foreign takeovers is the danger of their club losing its identity.
With financial concerns over the banking industry spreading worldwide, it remains to be seen whether the growth that premiership football has enjoyed in recent years can be sustained over the long term. There are plenty of cash rich billionaires from overseas willing to buy a leading premiership team. Hence, the prospect of more foreign investment in premiership football clubs is unlikely to go away.
