Tottenham look to pip rivals Arsenal to hotshot French pair M'Vila and Niang

Tottenham are rivalling Arsenal for Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila after the French club confirmed they have had an offer for the 22-year-old.
Speaking after Rennes defeat to Lyon on Saturday, club chairman Frederic de Saint-Serni, said: 'He has a concrete offer from England.'
M'Vila played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 reverse and afterwards revealed: 'I am happy. I'm not complaining and I'm playing. As long as I'm at Rennes, I will be available to the manager.

'I'm not getting worked up over that [transfer speculation]. I could very well spend one more season [at Rennes].'
Tottenham are also hopeful of beating Arsenal and AC Milan to Caen's striker M'Baye Niang, 17, with a £6m offer.
And the blows come in threes with Barcelona preparing to offer £11m for midfielder Alex Song this week.
Meanwhile, Nicklas Bendtner has been linked with a swap for AC Milan's Philippe Mexes.

One in, one out for England as Oxlade-Chamberlain is injured and Lescott called up

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has become the latest member of Roy Hodgson's England squad to pull out of Wednesday's friendly with Italy in Berne.
The winger reported for duty on Monday morning but, after picking up an ankle injury in Arsenal's friendly with Cologne on Sunday, has immediately been released back to his club.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's departure follows Sunday night's withdrawals of Joe Hart and Daniel Sturridge. Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has been called into Hodgson's squad.
The decision to call up Lescott had already been taken before Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled out.

It means Hodgson's squad has been trimmed to 20, with uncapped duo John Ruddy and Jack Butland the only remaining keepers.
If Butland gets on the pitch it would complete the incredible achievement of earning a senior cap and playing four times for Great Britain during the Olympic whilst his only senior experience at domestic level remains the 24 games he played in League Two for Cheltenham last season.

The 19-year-old was called into Hodgson's squad for Euro 2012 following Ruddy's withdrawal with a broken finger.
Although he did not play, Butland made a big impression on Hodgson.

He was also outstanding during Great Britain's run to the Olympic quarter-finals.

However, it was anticipated Butland would be released back to Birmingham on Tuesday for their Capital One Cup first-round clash with Barnet at St Andrew's.

Hart's back injury changed that and now Butland stands on the brink of his senior bow.

Beware Premier League: Tevez is back to his best, warns City coach Platt

David Platt has delivered a worrying message to Manchester City's Premier League rivals - Carlos Tevez is back to his best.
City managed to end their 44-year wait for a league title last term even though Tevez went AWOL for four months following a spat with manager Roberto Mancini over his role as a substitute against Bayern Munich.
Tevez eventually returned but though he helped stabilise a season which was losing momentum and claimed another championship medal, adding to the two he got at Manchester United, the Argentina star was generally a shadow of the player he had been before.
Back with a bang: Carlos Tevez missed four months of action last season
Back with a bang: Carlos Tevez missed four months of action last season

It was widely predicted he would leave this summer and at one point he was said to be on the brink of joining AC Milan.
Tevez remains at City though. And in Sunday's 3-2 Community Shield win over Chelsea at Villa Park, he delivered the kind of performance he is noted for.
His solo second-half goal put the Blues in front after they had trailed to Fernando Torres' opener and with less than a week to the opening game against newly-promoted Southampton, assistant manager Platt believes the signs are very encouraging.
'Carlos has worked ever so hard in pre-season,' he said.
'Since he has come back in he has really attacked his work and not had one day off.
'His goal was one of those you can remember him doing two years ago.
Stunner: Tevez scored City's second from outside the box

'He ducks inside, he goes away from people. That's what he's been missing and it was there again.'
Platt revealed Tevez had shrugged off a knock in training prior to the game, so determined was he to play in the fixture.
It was an example of the focus 28-year-old Tevez intends to maintain throughout the season after the difficulties of last term.
They have never been an issue amongst his team-mates and Platt feels it is time to move on from the controversy.
'A lot was said and done last year. Everybody has got to hold their hands up and say mistakes were made,' he said.
'But what do you do? Carlos has still got two years left on his contract.
Building bridges: Tevez and Mancini have repaired their differences
Building bridges: Tevez and Mancini have repaired their differences
'He is a very good player and he is playing for Manchester City.
'It is not a case of putting water under the bridge, it is a case of saying we are all batting on the same wicket here and we go forward together.'
Not that the City camp is entirely a happy one.
With Joleon Lescott sitting out the game and Stefan Savic replaced at half-time as he struggled to cope with Torres, Mancini opted for just three defenders during the second period, instead reinforcing his midfield.
It is the tactic which Wigan used to such startling effect last season, but clearly did not go down well with Kolo Toure, who was left frustrated on the bench and threw his kit bag onto the team bus after apparently having a furious row with Mancini.
Out of favour: Toure did not feature against Chelsea
Out of favour: Toure did not feature against Chelsea
As one of the first things Jack Rodwell did following his £15million arrival from Everton on Sunday was confirm he can play in central defence, even though he has never actually done it for the Toffeemen at senior level, Toure's future at City looks bleak.
'It is another system and another option the manager has,' said Pablo Zabaleta, who started at full-back then slotted into that three-man defensive unit.
'We have been working with three at the back in pre-season and it worked well.'
Toure presumably falls into the category of being surplus to requirements but hard to shift, the same as Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz.
Outcast: Adebayor has not played for City since January 2011

It does present a problem for the Blues as they try to meet UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, which Mancini would do well to remember before engaging in any escalation of his discontent with sporting director Brian Marwood.
'We are looking for other players, but I don't want to say which. Speak with Brian Marwood,' he said.
'I said I was unhappy (on Friday) but this is normal. Every manager is unhappy when you have one week to go and you haven't bought any players.
'I hope we are working and maybe this week we can do something about it.'

Terry's Euro ban slashed with Chelsea captain cleared for Champions League return

Chelsea captain John Terry will be able to play from the start of the Blues' Champions League campaign after having his three-match ban reduced on appeal by UEFA.
The England defender was sent off in last season's semi-final second leg against Barcelona in the Nou Camp for an off-the-ball clash with Alexis Sanchez.

The offence saw Terry handed an automatic three-match suspension for violent conduct - the first game of which was the final against Bayern Munich, where the Blues won the Europe's top prize for the first time after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
However, UEFA have partially upheld Terry's subsequent appeal, which means he will now also miss the Super Cup clash with Europa League winners Atletico Madrid on August 31, but with the remaining sanction suspended for three years.
A statement from UEFA read: 'The UEFA Appeals Body has partially upheld John Terry's appeal against the three-match European ban imposed on the Chelsea FC defender at the end of last season.

Terry was initially banned for three matches but Chelsea have successfully appealed to reduce his suspension

'Although the central defender is still suspended for three UEFA club competition matches, the third game of the ban has now been deferred for a probationary period of three years.
'The UEFA Appeals Body decided to partially uphold Terry's appeal against the three-match suspension handed down to him by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on 31 May.

'The England player served the first game of his European ban when he did not participate in the UEFA Champions League final against FC Bayern Munich on 19 May. He will also sit out Chelsea's UEFA Super Cup match against Club Atlitico de Madrid on 31 August.
'The original punishment related to Terry's sending-off in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg at FC Barcelona on 24 April.'
As winners, Chelsea qualified directly for the group stages of the Champions League, taking the place of Tottenham, who had finished above the Blues in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League.

Premier League big boys on alert with Alonso looking to leave Real Madrid

All-conquering Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso looks set to turn down a two-year contract extension at Real Madrid in order to leave the club next summer.
The former Liverpool star - who has won the World Cup, European Championship, La Liga and the Champions League in a stellar career - will see his Bernabeu contract expire in two years.

With the 30-year-old's value depreciating rapidly and with Madrid not short of midfield options they could be willing to cash in on one of their prize assets, according to Sport.
Liverpool would be interested in bringing the former Real Sociedad schemer back to Anfield, while Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal may also be tempted to make an offer.

Record breaker! McIlroy romps to victory by eight shots in USPGA Championship at Kiawah Island

Turn up in a shirt of Tiger red on the final day of a major, and you better be able to walk the walk. Fortunately, Rory McIlroy was more than up to the task on Sunday, marching proudly to his second major victory with a flawless performance at the USPGA Championship.
That blood-red shirt and this remarkable eight stroke triumph that eclipsed the previous record set by Jack Nicklaus in 1980 said it all.
Move over Tiger, this is Rory's era now.

Thirteen months after becoming the youngest winner of the US Open for 90 years – he won that one by eight as well -  the history man was at it again, becoming the youngest winner of this event since it adopted the strokeplay format in 1958. At 23 years and three months, he is four months younger than Tiger Woods when he won his second major.

Here's the company he is now keeping: only Tiger, Rory, Jack and Seve won two majors by the age of 25 in the modern era.

'This is a dream came true to add my name to the greats who have won this trophy,' said McIlroy.

Justin Rose could not make up the lost ground over McIlroy on the final day
'I had a good feeling about this week when I came here but I never imagined it would go quite as well as this. My putting in the final round was phenomenal.'

If truth be told, so was the rest of his game during this incredible Sunday but it was on the greens where he really left his mark, needing just 23 putts. McIlroy completed his third round held over from Saturday's storm in the morning  in 67 strokes before going out in the afternoon and beating that total by one. All on the course labelled by Golf Digest as the toughest course in America.

All the plaudits on this day belonged to players from team GB. The only player who seriously threatened McIlroy was Ian Poulter, who began with five straight birdies before fading a little to be part of the quartet who finished tied third alongside Justin Rose and defending champion Keegan Bradley.

Runner-up, would you believe, after a final round 69 was their fellow countryman David Lynn, the little-known 38 year old Englishman playing in just his second major and who can now look forward to a third at the Masters next April.

'I didn't know until I came off that this performance got me into Augusta as well so that's just brilliant, obviously,' said Stoke resident Lynn, who birdied all four par fives in his final round 68. His prize of £600,000 was three times larger than his previous best. 'When you're a kid you dream of playing in the four majors and now I've finished second at the PGA and I'm off to Augusta. That's just amazing.'
It's official then. Rory's 'difficult' summer is now over, and heaven knows what the internet trolls and the ignorant know-alls who wrote McIlroy off as a one major wonder are going to make of this. Falling in love and taking his eye off the ball was written up almost as a crime in some quarters, rather than part of the natural cycle of life.
Picture perfect: Rory celebrates his second major

As ever with McIlroy, in coming to terms with juggling the personal and professional, he has proved the fastest of learners. After staying up to watch his beloved Caroline Wozniacki play tennis on Saturday, he flattened the best players in his sport in a manner that was Roger Federer-good.

The brief moment of danger arrived when Poulter made the most mesmerizing start to any round he has played in his colourful career. He was adamant before going out he was playing so well he had a low number in him.

Who knew it would be so low he would stand over an eagle putt on the 7th with the chance to go seven under for his round? No Englishman or Northern Irishman had won this event since it became a strokeplay event and here was the prospect of a thrilling shoot-out between the pair to see who could create their own piece of history.

Class apart: McIlroy won the Championship by eight shots
Class apart: McIlroy won the Championship by eight shots

Class apart: McIlroy won the Championship by eight shots
Class apart: McIlroy won the Championship by eight shots
Not for long, mind. Not when McIlroy's on his game and begins with a four shot lead. It's like giving Mo Farah a 20 yard head start.

Let's hope Poults wins a major one day, though, because he's thrilling to watch when he's got his Ryder Cup hat on.  So it began: first hole – birdie from 15ft; 2nd hole – birdie from 4ft; 3rd – birdie from 4ft; 4th – birdie from 18ft; 5th – birdie from 18ft. When he stood over another birdie effort from 18ft at the 6th, there was almost a sense of surprise when it did not fall.

It was fantastic stuff, and so it continued when he found the par five 7th in two. How would McIlroy respond?

Unbridled: McIlroy celebrates after he birdied on the final hole
Unbridled: McIlroy celebrates after he birdied on the final hole
In a word: imperiously. From a difficult lie on pine straw at the 2nd, the 23 year old played a wonderful wedge to 5ft and stroked in the putt. At the next he struck his approach to 8ft and knocked in that birdie putt as well. Poulter was six under for seven holes and yet still trailed by two.

No wonder the errors crept in for Poults thereafter. His considerable consolation is that he is now in Europe's Ryder Cup team.

McIlroy, meanwhile, delivered a clinic. When he wasn't driving like Jack Nicklaus he was chipping and putting like Seve Ballesteros. Over the back nine it was him against the record books. Could he pass Nicklaus's record winning margin of seven strokes, established in 1980? What do you think? On the last hole he lined up a birdie putt from 20ft and, like so many on this day, it fell into the hole and he raised his arms in triumph.
By the side of the green was his dad Gerry, a humble golf club steward who sacrificed so much to give his boy his chance. At the end, the pair enjoyed a loving embrace.

What of the other man wearing red? Woods finished with a humdrum 72 to finish tied 11th. At 36, if truth be told, he looked ordinary by comparison and there's no shame in that. Not when McIlroy's in this mood.

As in London, so at Kiawah. Time to pass on the torch.

Ivanovic will NOT serve a ban for straight red card in Community Shield

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic will not face any suspension despite his red card in Sunday's fiery Community Shield defeat to Man City.
The Serbian was sent off near the end of the first half after catching fellow countryman Aleksandar Kolarov with a high tackle that referee Kevin Friend deemed worthy of a straight red card.

It was reported that Ivanovic would be banned for three matches, starting with Chelsea's opening Barclays Premier League fixture at Wigan next Sunday.
However, a change in FA ruling in August 2009 means that red cards in pre-season fixtures do not result in suspensions from competitive games.
As the rule change covered all non-competitive pre-season fixtures, including the Community Shield, it means Ivanovic will be free to play at the DW Stadium.

Song happy at Arsenal despite Barcelona preparing £17m bid for midfield star

Barcelona are ready to pay £17million for Arsenal's Alex Song despite the player admitting he is happy in north London.
The Spanish club are desperate to strengthen the defensive side of the game and new boss Tito Vilanova has decided Song's versatility makes the Cameroon man the ideal candidate.
Barca lost Sergio Busquets' back-up Seydou Keita over the summer and lack options in central defence, positions Song would be more than capable of filling.

Reports in Spain suggest Arsenal are playing hardball despite being open to an exceptional offer, and they have already scouted a host of other options, including Yann M'Vila.
Spanish press believe an offer of around £17m - for a player with two years left on his current deal - will be enough to sway the Gunners into letting Song follow Alex Hleb, Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas to switch between the two clubs in recent years.
Song is currently in the early stages of contract talks with his club and while he harbours no aspirations of forcing a move, he is interested in hearing what Barca have to say.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, the 24-year-old said: 'I am not going to lie if I said there is no interest but I am at Arsenal and I am happy at Arsenal.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal captain Fabregas has revealed he found his first season back with Barcelona a struggle.

He told Marca: 'Under [Pep] Guardiola I never really got to grips with the system. I had been playing another style of football and to take on board so much so quickly was difficult, because everyone else had already got it down.

'I am not asking for anything, but that is my way of playing. It is true that I am a bit anarchic, but that is my style. Some people commented that I lacked something last season, including Guardiola.
'It was my fault really because I tried to be what I am not; I am not Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta, or Thiago [Alcantara]. I am me and I need mobility, to participate more.'

Bolt bowled over! Usain considering offer from Warne to play Twenty20 in Oz

The next time you see Usain Bolt in action may not be on a running track, but with a cricket bat in his hand after revealing he is considering an offer from Shane Warne to play Twenty20 cricket in Australia next season.
The superstar Jamaican sprinter lit up the London 2012 Games, taking gold medals in the 100 metre, 200m and 4x100m relay, but could soon be running a mere 22 yards between the wickets.
Bolt is a massive fan of cricket and played the sport in his home nation at junior level and revealed his prowess during a charity match in 2009 when he clean-bowled Chris Gayle.

And now legendary leg-spinner Warne has offered him the opportunity to participate in Australia's Big Bash League which runs between December 7 and January 9. Bolt will consider the offer, if he can get enough time off.
Bolt said: 'If I get the chance I will definitely try because I know it's going to be a lot of fun. I don't know how good I am. I will probably have to get a lot of practice in.'
'Warne contacted me and asked me about if I am serious and if I really want to do it then he can put in a few words that should get it done. So we will see if I get the time off. I will try.'
And of all the various forms of the game, the Twenty20 version is Bolt's favourite as he can relate to the high tempo drama to which he is accustomed in the field of athletics.
'Twenty20, I love it. Just the fact that it is so exciting, it's about going hard the whole time, not just about playing shots.
'It's about being aggressive and I like that style of batsman.'
Warne took to Twitter to see if he could garner support for Bolt to join up with him at Melbourne Stars.
He said: 'Who would come watch @usainbolt play cricket for the Melb Stars in 2012 ? Should I continue chatting to him & try and make it happen ?'
He followed that up with a series of further tweets, hoping his 854,000 followers would join the campaign to get Bolt to Australia for the beginning of the Big Bash season.

'I would really appreciate if you could retweet my tweet re Melb stars & Usain Bolt, promise it will help Follow me if you want updates guys.'
Mike McKenna, project manager for the BBL on behalf of Cricket Australia is, understandably, very keen for Bolt to join the league. But only if he can reach the required standard.
'We'd be very keen to have someone like Usain Bolt involved in some way in the BBL,' McKenna said.
'He's very keen on cricket, he's been close to the Australian cricket team and I'd imagine he is pretty quick between the wickets.

'But we would want to make sure that any athletes can play another code to an appropriate level. The competition has gone beyond the novelty factor.'
The Jamaican is considering a number of options after his heroics in London, and has made no secret of his desire to pursue a career in football, and in particular at Manchester United.
The fastest man in the world would like a trial at Old Trafford, so he could show Sir Alex Ferguson his prowess, or he'd coach the likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia to be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.
'I don't know if Alex Ferguson will offer me a trial or not,' he told the Sun. 'But even if it doesn't happen I would like to come and help coach the attacking players at United like I did with Ronaldo - anything I can do to make sure the title does not end up with Manchester City again.'

Exclusive: Ferguson makes RVP peace call to rival Wenger over United's move for ace

Sir Alex Ferguson has held private discussions with Arsene Wenger over Manchester United's attempts to complete a dramatic swoop for Robin van Persie.
And Sportsmail understands Arsenal are expecting an improved offer following personal contact between the two managers which took place recently.

Sources say that a deal to take the Arsenal captain, who got 30 goals to win the golden boot last season, to Old Trafford could be completed by the time the season kicks off this weekend.
It is understood the Arsenal manager repeated his insistence to Ferguson the 29-year-old would not be allowed to leave for United for a penny under £30million - but the Gunners will listen to offers starting at £20million with add ons.
Ferguson's personal intervention into the proposed deal to sign Van Persie underlines the club's determination to land the Holland international.

However, the Old Trafford club would not be willing to meet Arsenal's inflated asking price, placing serious doubt over the protracted move.
The Gunners are willing to listen to offers starting at £20million, but Wenger is desperate not to sell his talisman to a Premier League rival - hence the sky-high price quote.
United were quoted £30million during initial talks between the two Premier League heavyweights earlier in the summer and it seems Arsenal's stance has not changed despite Ferguson's private chat with Wenger.

A shock move to Old Trafford now seems the only viable option for Van Persie in his attempts to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer after Manchester City and Juventus both stalled on their interest.
And it seems Wenger is facing a fight to keep hold of another one of his stars after Alex Song said Barcelona are interested in signing him.
The Spanish giants are huge admirers of the Cameroon midfielder, identifying him as a potential target.

Crunch talks: Wenger and Ferguson have held discussions over Van Persie's future

Sources in Spain have indicated that Barca will attempt to open talks with the Gunners this week.
And when asked about interest from Barcelona, Song said yesterday: 'I am not going to lie if I said there is no interest, but I am at Arsenal and I am happy at Arsenal.
'Barcelona are the best team in the world, and speculation will always continue until the window closes.'
The La Liga club's interest in Song is another unwanted headache for Wenger in the build up to new season - though the club are growing increasingly confident of signing Theo Walcott to a new contract.
Meanwhile, the ankle injury that has ruled Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of England's clash against Italy is not understood to be serious.
The midfielder withdrew from Roy Hodgson's squad yesterday, but his removal is precautionary. Gunners winger Ryo Miyaichi has joined Wigan on a season-long loan.

There's always one! Belarus female shot putter is stripped of gold medal after failing drugs test

  • Nadzeya Ostapchuk ordered to hand over gold medal after anabolic agent found in her system
  • Belarus athlete won shot put gold with a throw of 21.36m
  • Valerie Adams of new Zealand will now take the gold instead
After the closing ceremony bid a momentous farewell to Olympic athletes and visitors, a Belarusian shot putter has been stripped of her gold medal after failing a drugs test.
Nadzeya Ostapchuk has been ordered to hand over her medal after a banned substance was found in her system.
The Belarus athlete tested positive for anabolic agent metenolone during in-competition testing on August 5 and 6 and has been disqualified from the final results.

The gold medal is instead awarded to Valerie Adams of New Zealand, with Russia's Evgeniia Kolodko now taking silver and Lijiao Gong of China elevated to bronze.
An IOC statement read: 'The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that it has disqualified, withdrawn the medal from, and excluded Belarus's Nadzeya Ostapchuk (athletics, women's shot put) from the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London.

'The athlete was first requested to provide a urine sample for a doping control on 5 August. She competed the next day in the women's shot put event, where she placed first, and was asked to provide a sample straight after her competition.
'Both samples indicated the presence of metenolone, which is classified as anabolic agent under the 2012 Prohibited List.'
Ostapchuk, 31, was competing in her third Olympic Games in London, having finished fourth in Athens in 2004 and claimed bronze in Beijing four years ago.
Ostapchuk threw 21.36m with her third attempt to win last week's shot put competition comfortably from Adams (20.70m).
The Belarusian is not the only athlete to have failed a test at the 2012 Games, although there have not been many.
Russian track cyclist Victoria Baranova was sent home after a pre-Games test found traces of testosterone in her blood, and Syrian hurdler Ghfran Almouhama was sent packing after methylhexaneamine was found in her system.
Although there have been others disqualified and sent home at the London 2012 Games, Ostapchukis the first athlete to have a winning medal stripped from her.
